As infrastructure ages, water utility owners are tasked with the replacement of watermains that are reaching the end of their useful life. While certain sections of watermain can be replaced with a common open-cut-and-replace method, others run under highways, busy streets, and rivers. Some utility owners elect to ignore these problematic mains while others like Illinois American Water Company (ILAW) look to innovative technologies for a fix. As part of a long-term capital planning process and annual review, ILAW was able to proactively plan and execute on a project in their Chicago Metro District using an innovative technology called cured-in-place piping (CIPP).
